Background of the Study

Integrating mental health services into primary healthcare is a strategic approach to enhance accessibility and reduce the stigma associated with mental health care. Nurses play a pivotal role in this integration, often serving as the first point of contact for patients within primary healthcare centers. Their responsibilities include mental health assessments, early detection of mental health issues, providing basic psychological support, and referring patients to specialized services when necessary.

In Kebbi State, Nigeria, the integration of mental health services into primary healthcare is crucial due to the limited availability of specialized mental health professionals. Empowering nurses to take an active role in mental health care can improve service delivery and patient outcomes. This study aims to assess the role of nurses in integrating mental health services within primary healthcare centers in Kebbi State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite global recognition of the importance of integrating mental health into primary care, many primary healthcare centers in Kebbi State lack adequately trained personnel to manage mental health conditions. Nurses, who constitute a significant portion of the healthcare workforce, often have limited training in mental health, hindering effective service integration. Addressing this gap is essential to improve mental health care accessibility and quality in the region.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the current involvement of nurses in mental health service delivery within primary healthcare centers in Kebbi State.

2. To identify barriers faced by nurses in integrating mental health services into primary care.

3. To propose strategies to enhance nurses' capacity in delivering mental health services.

Research Questions

1. What is the extent of nurses' involvement in mental health service delivery in primary healthcare centers in Kebbi State?

2. What barriers do nurses encounter in integrating mental health services into primary care?

3. What strategies can be implemented to strengthen nurses' roles in mental health service delivery?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurses are significantly involved in mental health service delivery within primary healthcare centers in Kebbi State.

2. Nurses face substantial barriers in integrating mental health services into primary care.

3. Implementing targeted strategies can enhance nurses' capacity to deliver mental health services effectively.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in primary healthcare centers across Kebbi State, examining their roles, challenges, and potential strategies for effective mental health service integration. Limitations may include variability in healthcare center resources and potential biases in self-reported data from participating nurses.
